Waking Up Early in Advent
by Rev. K Karpen
For the last week or so, I've awakened at 4 am.sitting bolt
upright. Did I hear something? Or have some weird dream? Am I just excited?
Worried? Troubled? Sometimes I go back to bed. Sometimes I stay up, smug in
the feeling that whenever anyone else wakes up, I've been awake first.
When I look around at the political and religious landscape
these days, it feels like people are finally waking up. Waking up to the
absurdity of the war. Waking up to the shame of cutting programs for the poor
to keep in place tax cuts for the wealthy. Waking up to the ridiculous claims
made against gays and lesbians in the name of the faith.
I keep wondering, is there some new information, some piece of
news that has finally surfaced, sending peoples. thoughts in a different
direction? Or was I just so very clever to be awake before these other folks?
But I think the truth is this: At any time there are new things
we can see, if we are willing to look. And things we can.t see because its easier
to shut our eyes and roll over. So my question to myself this Advent is this:
what things do I continue not to see clearly? What would God show to me now, if
I only manage to stay awake?
